For example, if you could find sufficient ways to reduce your electrical usage, then you would be saving money on electricity. The only requirement is that you know the proper ways to do this so that you don’t end up throwing a wrench into your lifestyle and wind up living uncomfortably. That being said, not using your a/c during the summer is out. But there’s other, smarter ways to conserve electricity around the house.

There are two basic categories of methods. Tips and devices. Tips are different ways that you can adjust the way that you perform certain actions in order to be more electrically efficient and less wasteful. Devices are products that were designed to help you conserve electricity by either being themselves more efficient, or working with other devices to make them more efficient. So we’re going to take a good look at each of these two categories and discover some great and easy ways to save on power.

First we’ll start with the electricity saving tips. There are essentially different ways for you to use electricity so that you don’t waste any of it. These are:

  • insulate-water-heaterWhen washing clothes, use only cold water as hot water isn’t really necessary to get out stains. Actually, hot water shrinks certain fabrics and can help some stains set in tougher.
  • Same for dishes. Wash them with only cold water to avoid wasting electricity on water heating.
  • When doing laundry, try to only do large loads. This uses less electricity (and water) than multiple small loads.
  • Unplug devices when you’re not using them. Things like toasters, blenders, toaster ovens, microwaves, television sets, phone chargers, etc. all consume some electricity even if turned off (if left plugged in). Unplugging them prevents this from happening.
  • Insulate your water heater to improve its ability to hold heat and thus you will have less cooling cycles.
  • Clean or replace the air conditioner’s air filter regularly.
  • Use natural light during the daytime.
  • Clean under and behind your refrigerator regularly so it can do it’s job efficiently.
  • Also, set the fridge to 40° and freezer to 30°. Colder than this isn’t needed.

These tips will put you into good shape in terms of electrical efficiency. Not onto the devices.

These electricity saving devices are great for saving even more power. That’s what they were designed to do, after all! There are many different ones out there, but they include:

  • energy-starLED bulbs. They use far less electricity than incandescent ones.
  • Energy Star certified appliances. You can find refrigerators, TV sets, computers, washing machines, you name it, with the Energy Star logo. That means they use less electricity than their regular counterparts.
  • Power savers are another good one. You wire it into your home and it will work to prevent electrical waste caused by appliances like you air conditioner, pool pump, and others.
  • Programmable thermostats also work to optimize your a/c. You can fully program them, setting when your a/c starts and stops so it’s never left on by accident. Many also come with energy-saving programs pre-loaded into them.

The above devices work great to help you to reduce the amount of electricity that you use on a daily basis. Now if you didn’t notice, none of the tips or devices require you to make any drastic changes to the way you live your life. That means that you will be more likely to succeed with your electricity-saving endeavor, as you aren’t being inconvenienced by strange and uncomfortable habit changes (like washing clothes by hand). With the above, success is guaranteed! So get started right away saving on electricity.
